Black Brick, Sports Bar- Nicosia

Description

Black Brick – Cafeteria to Sports Bar — Nicosia

The Black Brick renovation in Nicosia transformed a modest cafeteria into a bold, contemporary sports bar destination. The project redefined the space through strong material contrasts, a dark and immersive colour palette, and a strategic spatial extension that significantly increased seating capacity and street presence. The redesign creates a high-energy, memorable venue that combines striking aesthetics with functional, operational planning.

Project Overview

The project was a commercial renovation and cafeteria conversion located in Nicosia, Cyprus. The scope included a full interior redesign, façade upgrade, and spatial expansion. The objective was to transform an outdated cafeteria into a high-impact sports bar with a strong and recognizable brand identity that attracts and engages visitors.

Before Renovation – The Former Cafeteria

Before the redesign, the space was practical but visually flat. It featured neutral colours, standard finishes, a conventional ceiling, and tiled flooring. Seating capacity was limited, circulation was tight, and branding elements were minimal. Lighting was functional but lacked atmosphere. Overall, the cafeteria lacked character, depth, and the kind of immersive experience expected in a modern hospitality environment.

After Renovation – Contemporary Sports Bar Transformation

Material Concept & Textural Identity
The interior now features black-painted brick walls, establishing a bold urban-industrial character. Exposed textures add authenticity and architectural depth, while warm timber finishes balance the dark palette. Industrial metal accents reinforce the sports bar concept, and concrete-style surfaces enhance the modern aesthetic. Upholstered seating introduces comfort and layered texture. The combination of brick, wood, metal, and dark finishes creates a cohesive visual identity while maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Colour Palette & Branding
Dominant matte black tones provide a powerful, cohesive identity, complemented by deep charcoal and earthy hues. Warm timber tones soften the industrial aesthetic, while strategic greenery introduces contrast and freshness. Graphic elements aligned with the sports theme enhance the overall experience. The transformation from a neutral cafeteria to a dramatic, immersive interior significantly elevates the customer journey.

Lighting Design Strategy
A layered lighting approach combines ambient, accent, and feature illumination. Warm LED lighting highlights textures and materials, while the bar counter serves as a visual focal point. Subtle perimeter lighting adds depth and intimacy, and exterior lighting enhances street visibility. This lighting strategy shifts the space from a daytime cafeteria to a vibrant evening sports venue.

Statement Ceiling Feature – Architectural Branding
A custom ceiling installation displaying the name “BLACK BRICK” is positioned above the main seating area. Bold typography on a matte black background, industrial-inspired finishes, and subtle integrated lighting turn the ceiling into a memorable branding element. This “fifth façade” reinforces the bar’s identity through architecture rather than conventional signage.

Spatial Reconfiguration & Capacity Increase
The renovation extended the footprint to increase seating capacity and reorganized the layout to improve circulation and service flow. Clear zoning separates the bar, kitchen, and seating areas, while optimized furniture placement maximizes efficiency. The interior flows seamlessly into the expanded exterior space, balancing aesthetics with operational practicality.

Urban Sports Lounge Experience
Despite being located on one of Nicosia’s busiest roads, the redesigned space provides a semi-private, immersive social environment. Layered textures, industrial boldness, and warm timber accents create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to linger. The result is a contemporary urban sports lounge that combines strong visual identity, functional design, and an engaging, memorable experience.
